Ruiz advocates for Education, Small Businesses and Unions
PSTA hosted Congressman Raul Ruiz's quarterly Labor Breakfast at the PSTA office on Wednesday, August 1. Dr. Ruiz discussed issues related to protecting workers' rights, fair wages and collective bargaining. He most recently introduced the Raise Act to Congress, which will give tax breaks to small businesses that increase wages for employees and another bill which will make grandparents eligible for the Family Leave Act.

PSTA Concludes Successful 2017-18
What Did Your Local Chapter Do This Past Year?
Working as a united front, our members were able to:
-Provided $7,000 dollars in scholarships ($15,000 over two years)
-Provided over $10,000 for professional development (For all who asked, Teach Like a Pirate will return this year).
-Joined local community groups in several community service projects (we're hoping we can grow this next year)
-Provided major financial support for the Fallen Heroes Project (Lee Wilson's tribute to our local military service men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice)
-Was a strong, united voice advocating for students
-Successfully influenced district decisions supporting teacher development
-Worked diligently to improve professionalism and school climate
-Protected teachers' due process across the district
-Provided legal services for teachers in need
-Negotiated a CBA which improved working conditions and salary
-Made sure teachers' voices were heard as part of the Insurance Committee
-Advocated for the profession at the state and national levels
-Most importantly, we continued to strengthen the professional relationship between the district and the union in order to provide the best possible education for our children

On Friday night, June 12, Palm Springs recognized its retirees, Teachers of the Year and employees completing their 10th, 20th and 30th year of service. A sold-out crowd enjoyed the annual dinner, an awards ceremony and dancing at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel.

Monthly Retirement Workshops
CalSTRS Workshops are conducted at the PSTA office on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. Effective April 1st, 2018, CalSTRS Workshops will only be held the 3rd Wednesday of every month.
Call 1(800) 228-5453 to reserve a spot. Members need to reserve a spot six weeks in advance. Workshops are geared toward members who will retire within five years.
